The expansion of Columbia’s campus into Manhattanville has been nothing short of contested, nevertheless, the site located on the intersection of 132nd and Broadway marks the opportunity to bridge the current neighborhood to Columbia’s future campus. The proposal aims to create a community pool where both communities are welcomed to congregate and share the interstitial space. The pools are raised above pedestrian path, allowing for a flux of public space that flows within the buildings ground level and is contained within the site. This space is designed to recharge public life in the area, whilst, serving as the connective center for the neighborhoods. The pools themselves are subdivided into three “sound typologies” that correlate spatially to its context; as the pools transition from the urban side of Broadway towards the residential side of Manhattanville housing, the pools directly reflect the acoustical properties of the location, from active to passive. In all, Manhattanville pools are the spatial stitch that intertwines the present and future communities.
